MIXED FEELINGS LP artwork

French producer Boston Bun has returned with some of his best work to date with his album MIXED FEELINGS released on 25 October via the Future Classic imprint.

MIXED FEELINGS is Boston Bun’s second album, and features 11 masterfully crafted house infused tracks. 2024 has been a year of profound polarity for Boston Bun as he’s experienced insurmountable joy due to the birth of his child, but he’s also experienced emotional turbulence due to family tragedies. So, for Boston Bun, the album is a culmination of gratitude and celebration as well as grief and turmoil.

Speaking on the album, Boston Bun divulges; “(It’s) a reflection on the ephemerality of our societies. Art, objects, human skills, or relationships – everything is more ephemeral than ever. It makes us feel replaceable. I started to think of all of my productions as emotional postcards that I sent to the future. I imagined a random kid somewhere in the world finding out about these tracks in 100 years, listening to a weird pirate radio. From then, inspiration was unlimited.

Stream Boston Bun MIXED FEELINGS below:

The paradox of the album also extends to the state of the world in 2024, with wars raging, governments, systems and regimes crumbling and natural disasters taking place now more than ever. It’s also a reflection of how fleeting our attention spans are as a society, and how on one side of the world people are living in bliss while on the other end people are experiencing the most heinous forms of suffering and injustice. Boston Bun sheds light on this; “MIXED FEELINGS is the best way to describe how it feels to be alive in 2024 – a lot of contradictory emotions; a lot of nonsense. You can be at a party, look at your phone, see a city being bombed live somewhere, a flooding killing thousands somewhere else, and put your phone back in your pocket and keep dancing.”

The album’s opening track ‘NOBODY // ME’ has been selected as part of the FC (FKA FIFA) 2025 soundtrack, alongside world-renowned artists Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, Glass Animals, Fred again.., and Disclosure. The album is a triumphant feat for Boston Bun, and the themes and messages behind it will undoubtedly resonate with a vast audience. Boston Bun is ushering in a new era in his career and it’s bound to break new grounds.

REVIEW:Trio KARMACODA share melodic house Remixes EP https://house-music.co/2022/02/11/reviewtrio-karmacoda-share-melodic-house-remixes-ep/ Fri, 11 Feb 2022 13:42:12 +0000 https://house-music.co/?p=1629

The wait has ended for the anticipated Remixes EP from band KARMACODA via Sola Musa Music. Released today with a new remix of  ‘Traps’ by Sailor & I, each remix has its own unique panache with melodic and deep house textures. The band also presents remixes from Anjunadeep artist Lycoriscoris for the original KARMACODA track ‘Make Me The One’, as well as ‘Feels’ by Extrawelt (Read our previous feature about the Extrawelt remix here).

Stream / Download: Remixes EP

Unveiled a few hours ago, the ‘Traps’ remix from Sailor & I has taken us by surprise with its ominous alien atmosphere and synth-centered ambiance. The original romantic core remains along with the abundant vocal capabilities of singer Jessica Ford and Brett Crockett as the center point.

Lycoriscoris’s spin on ‘Make Me The One’ is deliciously haunting with the echoing sincerity of Jessica’s vocals that linger on the track. Eerily warped electronics amidst a melodic landscape make one vibrantly alluring daydream. Extrawelt also follows an adrenaline-pumping direction with intriguingly eerie synth notes.

KARMACODA keeps the romance alive just in time for valentine’s day, with three of their most heartfelt tracks. Perfect for an intimate night in with that special someone.

Electronic music producer Maymind releases album June https://house-music.co/2021/11/09/electronic-music-producer-maymind-releases-album-june/ Tue, 09 Nov 2021 15:14:35 +0000 https://house-music.co/?p=1571 Image: AM Gordon

Maymind, the moniker of LA based musician / producer / DJ Leo Maymind, returns with a complex, deep groove left-field electronic gem ‘Left To My Own Devices’, lifted from his album ‘June’ out now.

‘Left To My Own Devices’ is a gorgeous and, at times, intelligent fusion of cinematic and widescreen sonics. With the album, Maymind has managed to perfectly balance understated undertones with soaring, uplifting production, and masterful sound design.

Leo explains: “There’s a story in ‘Left to My Own Devices,’ though like a lot of the best stories, I don’t think you need to understand exactly what the story is to understanding what the feeling is. In some ways it’s a love letter to both the canon of American electronic music and my younger self, giving that person a way forward, saying that all the struggles were worth it, to keep going. I think a lot of the journey of making June was trying to find this middle zone in between headphone listening and straight on club music.”

He goes on to add: “For ‘Left to My Own Devices’, I kept on resisting the urge to take the basic idea and turn it into a full on club track, but instead this version of the track (which is essentially how the first version of it was arranged) is what I stuck with. A friend described it as ‘super articulate, hyper produced’ which I feel like is an apt description for how I make music. While it’s still essentially loop based music, there’s an extreme precision to how each track is taking its own voyage.”

Born in Riga, Latvia when it was still under Soviet rule, raised in New Orleans and across the Midwest, a feeling of ‘otherness’ has always felt normal to Maymind. Leo recalls: “I never had a real ‘home’ growing up. My home was in my headphones. Seeing street performers play jazz in the New Orleans’ French Quarter left indelible marks on my young soul.”

A restless musical curiosity led Maymind to move to New York City after college in hopes of expanding his “band” Spanish Prisoners, a solo project that Maymind created in the hopes of collaboration. In 2015, after quietly switching modes and swapping his guitar for a sampler, Maymind resurfaced on Adam Marshall’s steely New Kanada label with a three-track EP of Detroit-flavored techno that crammed bright details into its every corner.

In 2016, a move to Los Angeles signaled another change in approach for Maymind, when a computer crash forced him to limit his gear to a small tabletop hardware setup. The result was Maymind’s first full-length album ‘Illumina’ (Umor Rex, 2017), which blended flanged, wiry drums with thick ambient pads and malleable synth trills; drawing praise and radio play from WFMU, the Wire, Red Bull Radio, and more.

Maymind‘s 2018 album ‘Cheap Storage’ on Atlantic Rhythms was described by PITCHFORK as ‘sharp and focused’ with ‘gratifying soundscapes that are easy to sink into’. The multifaceted artist continues his foray forward in the form of ‘June’, a complex, fascinating body of work out now. Leo says: “These songs subtly point to all the things I’ve loved at various points of my life- R&B, house, disco, sample-based electronic music, spiritual jazz and much more. To me, this album just feels like a complete sentence- something I’ve been trying to say for years but didn’t quite have the vocabulary at the time.”

Electronic musician Defset releases debut album Proximity https://house-music.co/2021/10/29/electronic-musician-defset-releases-debut-album-proximity/ Fri, 29 Oct 2021 12:33:41 +0000 https://house-music.co/?p=1564

Rising electronic producer DEFSET has released his debut album ‘Proximity’ via EMK – the new electronic music platform launched by Kartel Music Group on October 29 .

The album follows the release of a string of singles, ‘Deadlines’, ‘Shira 2’ and Bathtime’ which have demonstrated DEFSET’s mastery in using modular synthesisers and outboard gear to create a pallet of evolving melodies over syncopated, glitched out rhythms, delivering a deeply accomplished sonic blend of immersive techno and atmospheric electronic music.

Inspired by DEFSET’s memories of the UK rave scene from the early 90s, ‘Proximity’, explains the producer; “it’s an homage to the incredible times I’ve had throughout the decades in the UK party scene. While making this album I rediscovered electronic music and rediscovered so many happy memories.”

Although new to the electronic music scene, DEFSET is the moniker of Leo Neelands, known for his work as VFX Supervisor and VFX compositor, creating visual effects on some of the biggest VFX movies of all times such as ‘Harry Potter’, ‘World War Z’, ‘Gravity’, ‘The Hobbit’, ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’. “Music came first,” he explains, “I was making music in 1993, on an Atari ST with Cubase and a little drum machine. I was obsessed with making music, more than DJing, I have always been interested in the process behind creating the tracks.”

Written entirely in lockdown, DEFSET’s upcoming debut album ‘Proximity’, was mixed and mastered remotely by Tim Pennells (Floating Points, Nyx, Gazelle Twins, Tourist, Honne). Talking about the album creative process DEFESET says; “I started by buying some modular gear just before lockdown in an attempt to get back into creating stuff again, something I hadn’t done for about 5 years. I loved the hands on, computer free approach of modular synthesis. The lack of presets and the need to create every sound from scratch was hard to learn but completely liberating. I became obsessed with everything modular. If I wasn’t twiddling knobs I was watching YouTube tutorials or reading books and forums about it.”

Through the album DEFSET experiments with field recordings, modular synths, live drums and hardware analogue synths, creating every sound from scratch. The producer’s analog and modular approach to electronic music results in lush, energetic and enigmatic textural sounds.

Opening track ‘Islands’ sets the tone of the entire album, DEFSET’s use of modular drums and FM synthesis through Mutable Instruments’ Clouds granular audio processor, proving the producer’s ability to create music to affect mood through sound. Second track ‘Present’ is a powerful evolving melody built using the Arturia Modular V Moog emulator and heavily edited beats. In ‘Shira2’ field recordings captured during a trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro dance over a shuffling backbeat. ‘Bathtime’ shows DEFSET’s versatility as a musician – built around a sample of an acapella of legendary Jamaican reggae group Black Uruhu – the unique piece of slo-mo dub-techno features a section the producer wrote when drumming for a ska/reggae band with live bass and instrumentation. While ‘HoneySwede’ is a tough and atmospheric cut channelling 90s breaks.

The electronic dance music movement and the acid house movement are hugely important in music and youth culture and I was lucky to be around at the right time. I can’t help but be affected by those times and my music will always have one foot in a muddy field at 4am,” he enthuses.

Renowned house DJ Tensnake releases genre fused sophomore album https://house-music.co/2021/04/14/renowned-house-dj-tensnake-releases-genre-fused-sophomore-album/ https://house-music.co/2021/04/14/renowned-house-dj-tensnake-releases-genre-fused-sophomore-album/#comments Wed, 14 Apr 2021 08:56:09 +0000 http://housemusic.ground.fm/?p=1321

With a strong reputation as an accomplished artist who sits confidently in the underground retaining his kudos, whilst simultaneously releasing crossover hits, German producer and DJ Marco Niemerski, better known as Tensnake, has a proven track record. With over 70 Million combined streams of his work to date, he is one of the most acclaimed international house producers of the last decade.

Having remixed a who’s who of the world’s best-known pop talent including Dua Lipa, Aloe Blacc, Lana Del Ray, Azari & III, Pet Shop Boys, London Grammar and Duke Dumont, and working with three-time Grammy-winner Stuart Price, Nile Rodgers, Jamie Lidell and MNEK amongst many others, he returns with his second studio album entitled L.A. named after the city that until recently he called home.

The city and all its aspects had a huge influence on this music,” says Marco. “You see the Pacific Ocean coming up and you get all those sunsets. Amazing food, hiking, your first earthquake! And also, the craziness about it.”

Composed of 14 very distinct tracks with a wide array of feelings from L.A.’s upbeat party-loving craziness, to the bittersweet emotions triggered as a result of a 6-year relationship and breakup with then partner and album vocalist Fiora. This album showcases his outstanding and refined production range incorporating the distinct elements of house, funk, disco and 80s boogie alongside the added and very strong L.A. pop influence.

“L.A. is to pop music what Berlin is to Electronic Club Music. I wanted to put an album together that focused on songs and pop rather than on club tracks, L.A. was the right place to make it happen at that time”.

L.A. is a progression from his debut 2014 album Glow. With a steady stream of featured vocalists bringing extra dimension, this is everything that you would want from the accomplished producer, oozing smooth production, signature big vocal moments, and retro synth lines.

The last 6 months has seen Tensnake release five standout singles including ‘Automatic’ which is a rework of the Pointer Sister’s 1983 soul infused classic.

“It is a cover of one of my all-time favourites ‘80s songs, Fiora and I recorded the vocals while we were working together on my debut album Glow in 2013. I’ve always loved it, even though it did not make it onto my first album. So, seven years later, I gave it a new treatment, and reproduced the music”.

Second single from the album ‘Somebody Else’ features the UK’s Boy Matthews, best-known for his work on Duke Dumont’s gigantic 2015 house hit, Ocean Drive.’ Listen also for ‘Strange without You’ featuring Daramola, a multi Billboard-charting singer/songwriter based out of Miami, and most recently ‘Make You Mine.’ All have received critical acclaim.

Elsewhere, the fluid bassline and clipped guitars that propel ‘Antibodies’ infuse it with a classic French Touch feel. ‘World Beneath’ is probably the most Tensnake-esque thing on the album, a little leftfield and disco infused, and ‘Simpansi’ is a 4/4 instrumental, energetic and designed for the dancefloor.

With many moods and feelings reflected in this album you can hear the diversity in production throughout. In ‘Overnight’ there is a reduced pace, gentle, slower and low-slung feel, as is ‘Nightshift’ and ‘Latching Onto You ft Nazarene’. ‘Rules’ displays a soulful vocal from UK singer Chenai and a classic house feel. ‘Wait It Out’, picks up the pace again with classic house piano stabs and a powerful vocal from the same mystery singer that is featured on “Make You Mine”. Keeping up the momentum of the album and primed for radio is ‘Call Me ft HËXĖ’ with its uplifting UK house vibe.

The album closes, poignantly, with what Marco describes as his most personal track of all – ‘Adam’s Hill,’ a beautiful, hypnotic swoop that feels like it’s made to soundtrack a ruby red sunset. Towards the end of his time in California, Marco and Fiora went their separate ways. “It’s the last track I made in Los Angeles,” he says. “When I basically had packed all my stuff, left the house and I moved to a place called Adam’s Hill.”

Cataloguing his time spent in L.A., this album is almost a musical diary of Marco’s thoughts and feelings of his time in the city, the highs and lows, documenting a whole life chapter. Now that Marco has returned to Hamburg (Germany), he is ready to release his new body of work, propelling him to the top of the playlist charts and is sure to get well deserved airplay across international radio.

DJ Solomun to release an anticipated second album, Nobody Is Not Loved https://house-music.co/2021/02/17/dj-solomun-to-release-an-anticipated-second-album-nobody-is-not-loved/ Wed, 17 Feb 2021 12:09:01 +0000 http://housemusic.ground.fm/?p=1356 Image credit: Niels Freidel

Over a decade after releasing his debut album, dance music titan Solomun has dropped details about his highly anticipated follow-up Nobody Is Not Loved, out 14th May 2021 on his own NINL label in cooperation with BMG.

Nobody Is Not Loved features an array of high-profile guest collaborators including Jamie Foxx, Planningtorock, Zoot Woman, ÄTNA (twice), Anne Clark, Isolation Berlin and Tom Smith. The album is a bracing collection of tracks that plays out much like a DJ set – gradually increasing in tempo across its twelve tracks before mellowing out in the latter stages to ensure a soft landing.

When listening to Nobody Is Not Loved in its entirety, you immediately notice that Solomun, whose origins are in the underground DJ scene, incorporates an enormous variety of musical influences into his productions, freed from the necessity of it being suitable for club environments.  This fearlessness and sincerity feels incredibly good to listen to. Listeners can expect a wide range of electronic genres from Indie Electronica to Synthpop, Wave and Post Punk, to Solomun’s signature club sound.

Solomun, the Bosnian-born artist who grew up in Hamburg, released his debut album Dance, Baby in 2009, which was produced almost entirely on his own. In the 11 years between the two albums, Solomun has not only produced 24 of his own records and over 50 remixes (including artists such as Depeche Mode, Leonard Cohen, Jon Hopkins, Jamiroquai, Moderat, Interpol, Editors, Foals and Lana Del Rey), but as a touring DJ has played the most relevant festivals on the planet (including Coachella, Tomorrowland, Time Warp, etc.). He has hosted his own headline shows with crowds of up to 30,000 people, made his Ibiza residency “Solomun +1” at Pacha the most important on the island, and with his iconic Boiler Room Set also created one of the most streamed DJ sets in history.

More recently, 2020 has been yet another successful year for Solomun, who has counteracted the Covid-induced clubbing blackout by launching his new record label NINL, dropping a flurry of acclaimed singles and remixing tracks from the likes of Bob Moses, ZHU and Perry Farrell. Traditionally, before wrapping up the year, on Thursday, December 23rd, fans will be treated to Solomun’s annual ‘Christmas in Bed Mix’ via Soundcloud and YouTube.

Dance music fans have anxiously awaited Solomun’s second album. Nobody Is Not Loved proves that it has been well worth the wait.

Auntie Flo debuts on Disco Halal with ‘Kabsa’ album https://house-music.co/2019/07/18/auntie-flo-debuts-on-disco-halal-with-kabsa-album/ Thu, 18 Jul 2019 13:25:00 +0000 http://housemusic.ground.fm/2019/07/18/auntie-flo-debuts-on-disco-halal-with-kabsa-album/ Following the release of his acclaimed ‘Radio Highlife’ album on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, Auntie Flo makes his long-awaited debut on Moscoman’s Disco Halal imprint. Contributing a four-track EP titled ‘Kabsa’, the release is out now.

Regularly releasing music that is inspired by different places across the globe, ‘Kabsa’ is a continuation of this trend, this time exploring music from Levantine coastline. With the tracks, ‘Kabsa’, ‘Baba’ and ‘Ras’ named loosely after dishes from the region, the collection of work is also inspired by other trips to Tel Aviv, Marrakesh and Istanbul. After hearing the title track played by Auntie Flo on Red Light Radio, revered Ecuadorian producer Nicola Cruz reached out to offer a remix, turning the track into a sultry percussive edit.

Based in Berlin, but firmly rooted in the diverse and forward-facing musical scene of Tel Aviv, Moscoman’s Disco Halal label hails from beneath the minarets of the Holy Land. The imprint exists to present a tight-knit and growing community of musicians and producers, each transmitting their unique musical identity, yet each united by a unique sensibility, as well as a harmonious balance of rhythm and experimentation.

Encompassing elements of downtempo, new-wave and alternative pop, stitched together with a leftfield dancefloor throb, Disco Halal’s back-catalogue, filled with efforts from the likes of Simple Symmetry, The Organism and Moscoman himself, has seen the imprint rapidly emerging from the once-overlooked nightlife and club scene of Tel Aviv into the worldwide spectrum.

The track is lifted from his upcoming album “Release”, which is set to drop on May 17th.

Aucoin has a string of accomplishments in his wake, including a Prism Prize in 2013, (which he’s also been shortlisted for again this year) and nominations for ten East Coast Music Awards including Album, Song and Fan Choice Entertainer of the Year. He is a strong campaigner for social issues and has been involved with Childhood Cancer Canada and The Canadian Mental Health Association/Mental Health America. He has also crossed Canada for the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation running a series of half-marathons.

Speaking of ‘Release’ Aucoin explains:

“This is an album about death and about the foundations of our beliefs on the universe and how they help us cope with the knowledge of our mortality. The record is an alternate soundtrack to Alice In Wonderland (1951) and follows Alice as she descends into those beliefs never to leave her wonderland in the same way our beliefs give us the comfort to release our fighting of the inevitable. It was originally to be called Death Release and is largely based around the work of psychologist Ernest Becker’s Denial of Death and his students’ follow-up The Worm At The Core and terror management theory. It was recorded in 16 studios across Canada, US and UK with 51 musicians on it and houses church organs, analogue synths, theremins, string and horn sections and strong guest vocalists.”

Janus Rasmussen Releases Debut Solo Album ‘Vin’ https://house-music.co/2019/03/29/janus-rasmussen-releases-debut-solo-album-vin/ Fri, 29 Mar 2019 09:42:00 +0000 http://housemusic.ground.fm/2019/03/29/janus-rasmussen-releases-debut-solo-album-vin/ Well known for being one half of critically acclaimed techno duo KIASMOS, Scandinavian producer, Janus Rasmussen has released his debut solo album Vin on 29 March filled with 12 instrumental tracks rich with an array of warm house beats.

The entire album was recorded in Reykjavík, Iceland though the man himself hails from the Faroe Islands. Rasmussen found his love for music by getting together with friends and just make what they could. Using primitive software that kept crashing. But in that Rasmussen found exactly what he would be willing to cope with just to be able to carry out his passion for music-making.

Starting on a slower tempo and growing out from there, the album takes you on a tour of house genres. From tender emotional tracks to bass-heavy dance floor foot-stompers to get you moving – all while maintaining Janus Rasmussen’s experimental edge. Taking inspiration from acts like Radiohead, Aphex Twin and Leonard Cohen, he says of the process:

“I often work really quickly and I tend to be drawn to really strange ideas. I have this kind of obsession with finding something that really should not work and make it work. It’s very satisfying.”

From this album, Rasmussen has already released two singles, namely ‘Green Wine’ and ‘Lilla’, which gave us a great idea about the artist’s direction with this album. As for the tracks that follow, ‘March’ and ‘April’ follow in same deep house vein as ‘Lilla’. While ‘14’ and onwards presents a switch in vibe and urges movement. It’s masterfully diverse and each track conjures up images in one’s mind of what the music might look like if it were to take physical shape.
